Smartphones finally overtake feature phones

Smartphones finally overtake feature phones Gartner's latest figures show that for the first time ever, over half of all handsets sold are of the smart variety. In all, some 455.6 million mobile phones were bought by consumers globally over the past three months -- a 5.7 percent increase from the same period in 2012 -- of which 250.2 million (55%) were smartphones. It's the first time in history that smartphones have outsold feature phones and, according to Gartner's figures it's in China and Latin America where the demand is greatest. "Sales of feature phones continued to decline and the decrease was more pronounced in markets where the average selling price (ASP) for feature phones was much closer to the ASP of affordable smartphones," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.
